Tank Inspection Methodology

Our tank inspection methodology combines visual assessment with quantitative testing. Together, they give asset owners a complete tank integrity picture, not a surface-level review.

Internal and External Visual Survey

Inspectors examine internal and external tank surfaces for coating breakdown, corrosion, cracking, and lining defects. Internal surveys often require confined space access, conducted under relevant safety procedures.

Delamination Mapping

Delamination mapping identifies areas where coating or lining has separated from the substrate. We use tap testing and acoustic methods, both non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques, to detect delamination not visible on the surface.

Dry Film Thickness (DFT) Measurement

DFT measurement records coating thickness at defined intervals across the tank surface. Results are compared against the original specification to confirm coverage and identify under-thickness areas prone to early failure.

Holiday Detection

Holiday detection uses high-voltage or low-voltage testing to locate pinholes, voids, and discontinuities in protective coatings and linings. This is critical for tanks holding corrosive or hazardous contents, where a single defect can initiate failure.

Adhesion Pull-Off Testing

Adhesion testing measures the bond strength between coating and substrate using a calibrated pull-off gauge. Low adhesion values indicate a risk of coating disbondment under service conditions.

Condition Mapping and Rating

Findings from each test method are compiled into a condition map, rating each zone of the tank against a defined scale. This gives asset owners a clear, evidence-based view of where deterioration is concentrated and how urgently it needs addressing.

Condition ratings typically range from sound to critical, with each zone assessed independently rather than the tank receiving a single overall score. A tank floor inspection might return a critical rating while the roof rates sound. Each result drives its own action, not a blanket recommendation. This zone-by-zone approach prevents over-specification in areas that do not need it and under-specification in areas that do.

Scope, Methodology & Process

Tank inspection assesses the condition of storage and process tanks through internal and external visual survey, coating thickness testing, and defect detection. A NATA-accredited inspection under ISO/IEC 17020 confirms findings are independently verified, giving asset owners evidence to plan maintenance, remediation, or compliance reporting.

Why Independent Tank Inspection Matters

Tank inspection findings carry weight only if they hold up under scrutiny. An inspector with a commercial interest in the resulting work has an incentive to misstate condition risk. This can happen whether the misstatement is intentional or not.

Asset owners can rely on the condition rating to make decisions, not to justify a predetermined scope of work. What Does Tank Inspection Involve?

RemedyAP holds NATA accreditation under ISO/IEC 17020 Type A. This confirms our tank inspections are conducted independently of any party with a commercial interest in the outcome. The accreditation supports compliance reporting and gives asset owners confidence that findings will withstand scrutiny.

For above-ground storage tanks in petroleum and chemical service, our inspection scope aligns with the API 653 framework for in-service tank assessment. It covers the same condition categories asset owners expect under that standard.

When You Need a Tank Inspection

Tank inspection is typically required at four points in an asset’s lifecycle:

  • Pre-remediation: establishing condition data before specifying repair or recoating works, so the scope reflects actual deterioration rather than assumption
  • Post-construction: verifying coating and lining quality before a new or recoated tank enters service, while defects are still under warranty
  • Routine condition monitoring: scheduled inspection to track degradation over the asset’s service life and plan maintenance budgets ahead of failure
  • Asset acquisition: independent due diligence before purchasing or taking on infrastructure, confirming condition matches what is represented in the sale

NATA-Accredited Tank Inspection

Tank inspection findings give a remedial engineer the evidence base needed to write a defensible specification. Condition mapping shows which zones need recoating, lining replacement, or repair. DFT and adhesion results then inform material selection for that repair scope.

Where coating condition is the primary concern, findings also support a coating inspection scope. Results feed directly into the broader condition picture for the asset.

For water infrastructure tanks, our methodology aligns with WSA 201 Water Supply Code of Australia. This is published by the Water Services Association of Australia.
